YOUFIN – Financial Empowerment for Youth Migrants & Refugees is a transnational project that will run from April 2026 to March 2027 in Portugal, Belgium and Spain. The initiative aims to strengthen the financial independence and social inclusion of young migrants and refugees aged between 16 and 30 by developing essential financial and digital skills.
The main objective of the YOUFIN project is to equip young migrants and refugees with the knowledge, practical tools and confidence to manage their finances and build independent lives in their host countries. The project will develop and test a modular, culturally adapted Financial Literacy Toolkit, co-created with young people with migration experience.
Topics such as personal budgeting, income management (including informal work), using digital banking services, understanding contracts, and preventing financial risks and online fraud will be covered. YOUFIN also focuses on peer mentoring, training 15 young mentors across the three partner countries, who will act as facilitators and community liaisons, promoting continuous learning in non-formal education settings.
Although many integration programmes focus on language learning or access to employment, financial literacy remains an area that is largely overlooked, despite its importance for autonomy, resilience and active participation in society. Young migrants and refugees often face additional challenges in accessing financial services, including language barriers, unfamiliarity with local systems and greater vulnerability to exploitation or fraud.
YOUFIN has emerged in response to this need, promoting financial education as a tool for inclusion and empowerment. By combining non-formal education, peer mentoring and cooperation with local organisations, the project contributes to more informed, inclusive and resilient communities.
Over 90 young migrants and refugees trained across three countries, 15 youth peer mentors prepared to facilitate learning, a multilingual modular Financial Literacy Toolkit, an open-access Peer Mentoring Guide, local stakeholder events, and a youth-friendly website with digital materials to ensure wider impact and replication.
